Overview of Union Dues

Arbitration:Grievances and other legal matters for the local. This cost reflects an in-house lawyer and staff associated with the legal department and independent counsel when needed.

Automobiles: For Local 832 staff members who travel extensively in servicing the membership. Although the cost of fuel has increased over the years, we have been able to maintain this expenditure through better leasing agreements.

Communications: Staff and production costs of producing magazines, Web sites, and other informational items for the local. This department plays a vital role in keeping the membership up-to-date on union news, issues and current events.

Conferences and Education: For educating and training staff, holding annual stewards conference, the new youth conference and other events.

Financial Services: Local 832’s income tax preparation service, costs of bank charges, honorariums and staff that work in this department.

Negotiations: The cost of staff negotiators and bargaining committee members, legal costs and expenses incurred through the bargaining process.

Strikes and Lockouts: To maintain picket pay, the strike fund and materials needed during the strike such as signs and posters.

Offices/Buildings: Rent, utilities, property taxes and maintenance of union offices in Winnipeg, Brandon and Thompson. Also the insurance for these buildings and telephones.

Office Supplies: Includes office supplies, postage, couriers, paper and other related materials.

Per Capita and Other Membership Fees: Membership payments made to the UFCW Canada Council, UFCW International, Manitoba Federation of Labour and other labour groups.

Rental Equipment: Rental of photocopiers for the three offices, postage meters and maintenance and repairs of office equipment.

Servicing: The salaries and expenses of union representatives who visit members at their workplaces and enforce the union contracts. The largest single portion of the union budget, it demonstrates the local’s commitment to servicing and protecting the union membership.
